Simplifying Social Care: Part 3

As part of our series of blogs on simplifying social care, part 3 will look at how to fund your care and support and choosing a care provider.

After you ask for a care assessment, the council will assess your needs then make a financial assessment. After your care and financial assessment, if your local council agrees to fund some, or all your care services, they will assign you a personal budget and you will be offered the choice of one of these or a mixture of the three:

  • The local authority arranging and paying for the care services required on your behalf, known as indirect payments.
  • You choose the care services you want, and the council pays the companies on your behalf, known as an individual service fund.
  • The council pays your personal budget into your bank account or that of someone nominated by you, known as direct payments.

What are Direct Payments?

Direct payments offer more choice and flexibility over your care provision and give you control but do come with responsibilities.

What is NHS Continuing Healthcare?

If you have a disability or complex medical problem, you might qualify for free NHS continuing healthcare. This is a package of healthcare that’s arranged and funded by the NHS. The NHS website www.nhs.uk can give you more information about this.

What happens if I’m approved for Social Care Funding?

Once your budget is agreed by the Local Authority or NHS, the next step is to select a care provider. You will now be able to start receiving ongoing support from your chosen care provider. Any service you receive should be reviewed regularly to ensure it is meeting your care plan needs. If your local council has arranged support for you, they must review your care plan within three months. After this, your care plan should be reviewed at least once a year or more often if needed.
